I to scan tons of documents and sort them automatically. What are my possibilities?

I own thousands of single-page documents that need to be scan and archived electronically. I know there are some greatly expensive packages that use OCR and "zoning" to recognize the document's characterisitcs (vendor, story no., date, ...) and move it to the right folder. Is there a "cheap" solution that does the brief, even using another system? Anything in the free open-source kingdom? Of course I have a clad scanner that can handle the "hard" slice. Thanks a lot.

Answer:
It adjectives depend what you want to do with the scan objects. If you're just file them away, then a short time ago scan it, you won't even need OCR. If your're preparing to hang on to them for future editing purposes, next you better get yourself some righteous coffee and a cosy chair.
Scan them as pdfs
Then merge pdfs to hang on to them together in files
