Can you recommend hardware and software for scan roomy a substantial number of photos?

I'm hoping to digitise the relatives photo collection over the summer (a large job) and I'm looking for suggestion on the best (on a budget) hardware and software out there for the charge. Any advice would be appreciated.

Buy a appropriate, high resolution scanner and use the software that comes near it. Over the years the prices have come down and the competence and software have better. I like the bright Canon scanners. If you have slides and negative in the collection, be sure you achieve one that will scan those too.
