Answer:
here's some free OCR programs
You must scan it using OCR software. Usually you get that software next to your printer. Look for some kind of printer toolbox deity to see if you can set the scan to text. Also, besure you hide away the fia as a .DOC and not .RTF. RTF sometimes gives abnormal outcomes. More than likely you will hold to edit the scan by doing spell check when you are done.
By motto that you're getting characters, it sounds like you're on the right track. You have need of to use an OCR to convert the printed words to editable text. OCR should be quantity of your scanner software.

My guesses as to why the characters make no sense...
- Make sure that your artistic in not individual scanned upside down.
- The artistic should not be skewed when scanned, it should be square to the scanner bed
- For better meticulousness, make sure the scanner is set to at most minuscule 300dpi or higher
- Keep the driver up to date
