Are you sure you have the VISTA compatable drivers for the scanner?
Go to the network site for the company that made the scanner and download the VISTA compatable drivers (If they have them out yet) Install the drivers and VISTA should consequently find the scanner.
It might not be compatible with Windows 98. You'll own to get a subsequent version of Windows. (Windows 2000/XP/Vista)
