Epson make good scanners. HP scanners are of righteous quality, but slower.
I similar to Canon for quality, speed and compact size.
epson is dutiful, so is HP. I also happen to be a Canon enthusiast - my 8400 is awesome.

spend a little time near the manual (yuk!) to amount out how to use the controls, such as contrast or other enhancements. The best is to draw from as natural a scan and do any tweaking contained by Photoshop (or a similar package).

Fortunately great scanners are relativel cheap these days and they only plug in near USB.
Depends what you want to do. If you're scanning prints, within are hundreds of scanners which will give perfect results. Any review website will point you in the right direction.
For best talent you need a scanner that will scan negative, or slides. They will give you much better results than any flatbed scanner.
Nikon bring in some, or if that's too expensive Plustek's OpticFilm 7200 costs around lb125.
