I hold a Packard Bell diamond 1200+ scanner which never worked too well since I get it but I could sort of manage. However I have to reformat and reinstall windows xp, not from the disc that the productive operating system was installed from, another disc. I found that the scanner driver cd had gone missing so I tried to download a driver from several websites. Seems to be like driver each time but purely won't install and the PC doesn't recognise it's even got a scanner connected. Anyone any design?

why not lately get an adjectives in one printer scanner etc
Try www.driversguide.com you own to register but its free. People upload drivers they have already tested so its reasonably reliable.
The chances are that the maker have'nt produced XP drivers for your model and are saying that window 2000 or me will work, I had matching problem with my Packard bell scanner.( which in truth is a rebadged musteck)
