Wat does dpi surrounded by a printer signify... is it dots per square inch?

Answer:
Close, but not fairly. DPI refers to dots per inch, but not dots per "square" inch. You'll find some printers that have different verticle and horizontal resolution. Multiply these numbers together to carry the per square inch resolution. In most printers however, you'll find just one number close to 1200dpi. This would mean that the square inch resolution is 1200dpi x 1200dpi or 1,440,000 dots per square inch.
yes

Dots per Square Inch
yes dpi = dots per (square) inch. the complex the dpi the higher the resolution/picture element.
