you should be able to run a USB printer minus any issue on with window 98 providing it is SE, otherwise Microsoft does still support 98 and thus you can get USB driver.
Look at the software requirement down on the box, generally I lean towards HP as a reliable printer. I own an 8 year old HP to be precise still kickin and printing wonderfully.
You can also purchase adapters that will convert USB to 25 pin parallel.
I'm still running 98SE and have no problem next to the two printers I run off my USB ports (I've get six).
USB support came surrounded by on a later publication of Windows95, so Windows 98 should be fine, especially if you have it updated near all possible updates.
Windows 98 is no longer totally good - even Microsoft don't even support it any longer, connotation that if some fraudsters find a fault beside it that allows them to take it over, Microsoft no longer create patch for it.
You should upgrade to Windows XP as soon as you can - it is more reliable, faster, and more efficient than Windows 98, and benefits from regular wellbeing updates from Microsoft.
Parallel printers are still available, like the Epson Photo 2100 but they are impressively expensive and are not "all in one".
If you own a spare PCi slot on the motherboard just buy a PCi USB card (they are around lb10 ($15).
Your printer will work next to this providing it includes drivers for Windows 98.

W98 MAY and I utter MAY be a problem if you are surfing the net.
Upgrading a Win 98 system is expensive and not advise.
Firstly you will need to upgrade your memory to at 512 Mb, (before you loudmouths rumble on about have your system working on 128Mb) using Win XP with smaller quantity than 512 Mb of RAM is a waste of money,it's close to having an Indy vehicle with the gearbox of a grassland mower.
Then there is the size of your thorny drive to consider Win XP will need at lowest 2 Gb on your drive when installed and another 1 Gb or so whilst installing.
Your motherboard bios will need updating if it is available.
The cost is another factor lb80 ($120) for Windows XP, the cost of the memory lb50 ($75). Plus the cost of have it done if you cannot do it yourself. Maybe lb200 ($300) in adjectives. Not worth the hassle as Dell do brand new systems for not much more. including flat blind monitor, WinXP and Microsoft Works.
