In no way are ink cartridges environmentally friendly. They're made of plastic and are not biodegradable.
I work contained by IT support and know the way the're disposed of - landfill. I know of no company that recycle the plastic and the government surrounded by the UK doesn't collect from big institutions like the one I work for. This may vary in other countries, but I don't know.
The solely concesion to environmental concern is that they are re-used, though this I belive is mainly monetarily motivated as it's cheeper to do than to create a foreign cartridge. They offer you some money back if you mitt over your empties, however most companies don't do it next to ink, only near laser toner cartridges so there's not even that.

If you use Epson Cartridges then you are out of luck, Epson do not do recycle.

Mine are environmentally and financially friendly.....I hold had one and the same carts surrounded by for the last 17 months, done roughly speaking 1000 photos, +a few handbooks, 200 page plus.
I use a "Continuous Ink Supply System" (search term) on an Epson 320 photo.
Carts work out at forty pence each.....as against lb6.50
