It sounds like you hold formatted your computer and need to reinstall the drivers. Go to the manufacturer website and look for support and downloads and find the ones for your particular model Download and install them. its because you did not install the driver for your video card.
check you video cards model then download the most modern driver for it.
It may be a Dinosaur for all we know.

Just as adjectives the others have already stated, you probably in recent times need to install the right drivers. But also spawn sure that you get the monitor set up correctly. The video drivers won't fix a problem if the laptop assumes the monitor is 640 X 480 at 256 colors... Hopefully you already have the cd/disks to update the drivers. If not, at the microsoft update site, it can detect the video card, and monitor to set up the right drivers. Also, the control panel 'add hardware' will allow you to install drivers for the devices, and give you the choice for windows to be in motion on WWW and look for the correct drivers. If you can't get in that from here, you may have to resort to going to MFGR websites, and download from at hand. You need to know what you enjoy to make sure that you find the right ones...
