Monitor resolution scale issue?

I know on a standard NON widescreen LCD monitor (a 17 inch) the proportions are 640x480, 800x600 & 1024x768.
What are the proportional lower resolutions for a widescreen LCD monitor (22 inch) running original at 1680x1050? Whenever I try to lower it in a team game, it gets adjectives out of whack because the settings I am trying are not proportionally correct.
Thanks!

Answer:
1680 by 1050 has a 16:10 ratio.

So:
1440 by 900
1280 by 768 is close (should be 755)
640 by 400

Are the lone VESA timings I see.
1) 1680x1050
2) 1600x900
3) 1400x1050
4) 1280x1024
5) 1280x960
6) 1280x768
7) 1280x720
8) 1280x600
9) 1152x864
10) 1024x768
11) 800x600

I have a 22" Samsung SyncMaster 226BW
On my laptop, in that is a BIOS option something like the LCD screen which let me have the choice to display non-native resolution in correct proportion, or to stretch it out to saturate the screen (and thus be the wrong proportion and things look stretched and fuzzy). Maybe in that is a setting like this near the your video drivers or BIOS?
