Hi within. There are three color guns located toward the rear of a CRT monitor, or Cathode Ray Tube. The majority of these monitors are larger, deeper monitors than the LCD monitors of unpaid. LCD monitors are typically much thinner. Without knowing which of these you have, I would hold to assume you have CRT as I've not hear too many cases of losing red on LCD's. If you own the larger, deeper CRT, it's quite possible the red gun is no longer functional for multiple different reasons - leaky capacitor, electrical short, burned out component, etc. To rule out the video card as the culprit, if you own a known virtuous video card, plug it in and see if the problem disappears. If it doesn't, I would suspect a doomed to failure monitor and would recommend replacing it. Check your video cable, make sure it's connected properly. Give it a joggle. If that doesn't work, try checking out the pins on the connectors to see if any are bent. Try swapping out the cable too.

The causes of loosing a dedicated color are many, from what have already been suggested to the actual gun within the cathode ray tube. The cathode streak tube is the least plausible cause of the problem.
