Make sure you have installed the appropiate graphics drivers, if you don't hold them installed, Windows has to use it's generic drivers which don't support highly much, including high resolutions.
Be sure to install the correct graphics card or video driver. Once explicitly installed you should be able to adjust the resolution.
It sounds resembling you have not installed your video card drivers. If you know what munificent of video card you have, turn to the chip manufacturer's website (Nvidia, Intel, etc.) and download the drivers.
You can find out what kind of video card you enjoy by right-clicking on 'My Computer' and selecting properties. Then click the Hardware tab, and the Device arranger button. Under 'Display Adapters' you will see your video card listed.
