you need a tv tuner

option 2.
near is lots of tv sites like

Hauppauge.com make the best line of TV tuner cards. I use the MCE-500 card -- dual analog tuner. It works great. I history all my TV shows on my hdd -- similar to TiVo, only no $17/mo. charge.

I would suggest looking into a tuner/software/remote control bundle from Snapstream.com.

Stay away from ATI's All In Wonder. I bought it and get burned. Problem? No on-board MPEG-2 hardware encoder? Eats up CPU cycles like crazy.

BTW, because of differences contained by color/brightness, some tv shows like sci-fi that are black/dark don't show up resourcefully. You may want to use your videocard's s-video out to your TV to get around this, or spawn adjustments to your monitor.
You requirement a TV Tuner. I hooked my computer up to my TV and record shows through medium center.
