( if unattended to, i mean )

Go to your display settings->blind saver tab and look at your power control settings (bottom of that page). Change the settings on there. It be probably set to conserve power.
The dimness is probably due to the brightness settings on your laptop.
If you have the booklet for it, look for the backlight controls. It will be the Function key you held up to that time (Fn) while pressing another key. The other push button should have something close to a sun on it. Dells are normally the up/down key, so try holding Fn and tapping the Up arrow.
If that doesn't work, the backlight may be inexact and needs to be sent rear legs.
Send it back, I have a problem with a Dell laptop and they offered to dispatch me another one but when I got it guess what? It be a refurbished one for 1700.00. I had to write a certified message to Dell. You can never get anyone to speak english and you cannot capture the same soul to help you so they follow thru near the problem. I finally got my money backbone and went and purchased a HP and get a bigger computer and saved 200.00.
You will also sense a key at the top middle of your keybord near a sun or light on the switch. use the ctrl + the newly found switch and your screen will be brighter.
Your LCD eyeshade is a bunch of liquid crystals. They do not night light up by themselves. They need a bedside light in the support to make them detectable to you. It seems as if your backlight as gone defective. Contact Dell. They hold a great warranty system and will be able to replace this for you.
return it . you shouldn`t hold problems straight out of the box.
