Compaq monitor problems?

i hold a microphone embeded into my monitor and pluged it to my pc and it didnt work, presently, i am assuming the ac/dc thing within the back the jack where on earth you plug a ac thing contained by is the problem, all i want to know now if i.e. the problem and what kind of watt or volt plug i want because i dont want to ruin it with one around my house cus thats what im gonna use, please abet im begging you
