glad you figured this one out for yourself.. can't believe that the first notion everyone else had be to throw money at it.. sorry i didn't get here sooner, after 24 years of working on computers, I know that it isn't other necessary to replace things newly cause they're not right at that moment.
My suggestion would hold been to christen a local computer shop, NOT a chain and obtain suggestions from them. they are usually less wishing for to take your money unless within is a true need.

There is nothing you can do to fix that besides buy a latest monitor. If there really is a opening it has get to be more expensive than buying a new monitor.
It's toast...beside a crt the waves gain disturbed by magnetic force and when you move the magnet the rays move final to normal. Unfortunately near lcd's you've permanently distorted the crystals. Time to attain a new one. Expensive lesson to revise.
if it is a crt monitor, (big old bulky one) you involve to get a special alluring field generator magnet and create specific passes across the eyeshade in decree to reset the magnetic pieces contained by the monitor... it is prob cheaper to go buy a 17, 19" LCD for $100
