How do I force my inspiron 1000 to output video to a vga adapter lacking a monitor attached?

I bought a vga to s-video adapter and cannot seize a picture to show up on the tv. it is just a straight through cord. vga womanly on one end and s-video/compsite feminine on the other. didn't know if this is something related to the sis m650 chipset or something to do with hardware appreciation in window. using xp pro sp1, 512mb memory, everthing else stock.

Answer:
Make sure that you have it connected up to that time windows boots up or the contraption is on, then turn your computer on so that the mechanism detects the tv as a plug and play device.

Also your machine should hold an Fn key and I believe it is F5 that will switch between displays. You can also turn to advanced display properties ( right click on desktop --> properties --> Display tab --> Advanced properties ) In there , here should be a tab for swapping between a first display and a secondary display. Obviously configure your tv settings to be what they should be etc.

Some articles I found by doing a google dig out :

Those should get you started and pointed surrounded by the right direction :)
