i'm using an LG monitor, from my experience it's a really right brand. don't know if it's the best tho :p
I used Viewsonic for years without problems. Then I bought an Acer LCD (because of price) and I enjoy been pleased beside it. In fact I love it.

I enjoy had this samsung syncmaster 753df 17" since more or less 2000 it has a pure flat peak and is great for photo editing and gaming.
I'm incredibly happy beside my Dell 2405FPW. I was severely, very frustrated from chitchat to their terrible support when it arrived next to a huge crack in it and I needed a replacement. Other than Dell's mythological support weakness, it's be a great monitor.
