Hooking up an external moniter?

HI, I enjoy an lcd tv/ moniter, but when I try and hook my laptop up to it, I am only competent to use it as an extended desktop. When I go into settings and explain to it to be the primary moniter, it lets me click the picking, but then still doesnt do it on the restart.
I tried to hook my desktop up to it, but by desktop wouldnt hook up at adjectives, and now it wont hook rear legs up to my regular moniter either, it is not even reponding. Anyone know if within are moniter settings or driver Im supposed to download or anything else im not doing right?

Answer:
idk
Usually laptops want you to still use their screen for some member of the use. It might work if you get a dock which later turns the laptop into a desktop. As for your desktop, your video card may not be powerful enough or allow the configuration next to a monitor that is also a TV.
1. on your laptop look at the functions key (F1, F2 etc). one of them has an statue of two monitors. hold down the function key, usually a different colored switch with the junk mail FN on it and press the key mentioned above. you can use both monitors simultaneously or exclusively.

what it seem you did intially was turn into the displays settings and configured your video adapter to be two desktops. i dont think you want that.
