Sounds close to it's broken. You probably need a contemporary one. If it's your whole blind that's dark, merely try to turn up the brightness or contrast a bit. It will at least variety it look better.
Trust me when I say it is ABSOLUTLY NOT SAFE to work on a monitor due to the soaring levels of voltage that exist contained by there. You'll be better past its sell-by date buying a new one.
