Laptop Screen Resolution Changes when closing laptop lid.?

I enjoy been surrounded by IT for 8 years and cannot for the life of my read between the lines why my laptop does this.

I have a Dell Inspiron B120.

My resolution is set to 1024x768.

Now I enjoy it set to leave the monitor on and do zilch when the lid is closed. But when I open the lid final up. viola! The resolution is now 800x600.. It is so intensely annoying, I have no perception why it does this. Any ideas?
