I own a samsungSyncMaster 22" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD Monitor (225BW) with resolution of 1680 x 1050. if i connect it beside samsung blu-ray player, will the monitor perform better than 720p HDTV?

Yes. while it isn't aboriginal 1080P, it's still much higher resolution than 720P. My Samsung 215TW is hooked up to my high-def cable box and have the same resolution.
720P = 1280x720 Pixels.
1080P= 1920x1080 Pixels.
