My topical monitor like my fiancee's computer best -- why?

I be just given a brand new Sony 17 inch LCD SDMHS75 monitor by my fiancee, but when I hooked it up to my Sony computer, the colors looked washed out, even after hours of tweaking everything from brightness, to contrast, to RGB and gamma. I get it looking okay when I was done, but it be way below par within color to my 10 year old CRT monitor. I read that LCD's hold this problem, so I have the monitor rear legs to him. He hooked it up to his brand new HP mechanism, and now the monitor looks fantastic! I knowledgeable that his machine have a good video card near 256 memory, and my Vaio from 2003 only have an Intel 856G integrated graphics gard, with 64MB max, and dynamically shared graphics memory.

My ask is: do video cards make this much of a difference? Should I upgrade my video card and video memory beforehand even attempting to get another LCD monitor?
