Defragmenting the "C" drive?

I'm trying to defragment a immensely fragmented C drive and I'm getting an error message saying "cannont defragment this read-only volume"

What give?

Answer:
Check that you have okay under the wellbeing tab of your C drive properties to Write to the drive. If not make sure that you hold that permission.

If that fail I would try to use a 3rd party defragmenting tool as I enjoy had bleak experiences with the built contained by Windows one.

Check Download.com and they have a yawning selection of defragmenting tools. I individually use Auslogics (SP?).
