If all you are going to next to it is IM, Internet, etc. - it will be adequate.
I picked up an acer aspire series 3000 just about a year ago.
I bought it about a week ripened from a friend for $300
I have no problems near it other than it one slow at times.
umm no way walk to someplace like tigerdirect.com or latest egg and get eve a refurbished correct brand with much more power for around the same price... rem register books are not redily upgradeable like a desktop, nor do they hold the power!

For minimal use this laptop is great. I didn't see an Acer laptop underneath $449, though. Anyway, for internet and e-mail this laptop is great. At a 500-ish price you could also look into refurbished laptops, that have better specs. Here's an example: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...
