Here is the short and rough revision of Serial (SATA) and Parallel (PATA) . In some situations data sent contained by a single stream (serial) connection is faster than sending information in parallel streams. This is because information in parallel requires a clock to conduct operations sending and receiving of the parallel notes streams. This added computation can reduce helpfulness to the point that sending in contained by a single stream would be faster. Desktops and notebooks unanimously benefit from shift to SATA. The debate is still on for network servers and disk arrays. In the casing of my recent notebook upgrade from Dell D600 (PATA) to D620 (SATA) my test indicated that my profile transfer have doubled. Some of this can be attributed to better processor and RAM bus in the D620 but in attendance is no doubt that the SATA drive accounts for the majority of alteration.
Here is the problem for all notebook users. The drive controller, memory socket and CPU socket is pretty much written contained by stone when you buy a notebook. A notebook chassis is designed around a motherboard. Yes, you will find adapters to connect SATA drives to PATA controllers but there are two problems. You are not going to own a very intricate time stuffing one into your notebook, if it is possible. Second, the SATA drive will only verbs data as efficient as the PATA controller. (weakest link theory)
So short of upgrading the in one piece notebook, I recommend that you upgrade to hard drive beside higher RPM and faster access time. Your Toshiba is 4200RPM and drives next to 7200RPM are available. I purchased a USB drive enclosure for my antediluvian notebook drive and use it to transfer files between computers. (Example: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.as...
Good luck beside your upgrade!
