I hold to replace my laptop rock-hard drive. It have ATA 2/3/4/5 interface. What can I replace it beside?

I own a TravelMate 290 series with a Centrino processor. The current drive is a Toshiba MK4021GAS drive near is listed as person ATA 2/3/4/5 interface. Can I replace it with a SATA interface drive instead? Also, could someone explain what the difference would be contained by a laptop / notebook between the two drives? Thanks.

Here is the short and rough revision of Serial (SATA) and Parallel (PATA) .
