(I'm not at all interested in gaming, video-editing or other high-performance tasks...)

that seems like a very very good machine. I doubt you will find anything better. And you have also chosen the cheapest brand for the quality you get. Hope it all works out.
Check your local stores. While I normally hate to recommend retails stores, we recently found this notebook (priced at $850 online) at $699 at the local Best Buy store. It was brand new in-box, and to me the 17" wide-screen format and no shipping costs were worth going to the store.

Put $700 or so on an apple mac book, that way you can run windows, mac os , linux etc, has an inbuilt isight camera
