Go with a Dell, My outmoded boss was a Network tech and the company bought him a 3000 dollar Hp he detested it, this guy could fix anything comp related when it was my time to buy a laptop he told me buy a Dell, as expected i didn't listen lol, Bought a Toshiba instead cause of adjectives the bells and whistle's it had, Well 13 months next its Dead, Just bought me a sweet Dell there powerfully put together and the Owners manuals in reality show you how to take it apart and install parts yourself. Just don't receive Vista Installed ask for XP cause i enjoy vista and its been a big headache from sunshine one. Macs aren't that reliable either, My mom have imac and a powerbook, Really expensive to repair. And you have to be a rocket scientist only to figure out the programs and where on earth everything is stored. and good luck surrounded by finding Mac programs
Don't get dell! A friend of mine owns one and it have been giving her nought but trouble. Get a Mac!!! HP's are also very nice though...

I own a brand new dell inspiron e1505 and it works great. HPs are also enormously reliable, but the dell has better internet nouns. But if you like design and movie editing consequently DEFINITELY get a mac.
