My father bought a second paw compaq EVO N800c off ebay, it be listed as haing a duff harddrive, so he bought a brand modern 40 Gig compaq harddrive for it. It just refuse to work. The compaq wouldnt recognise the HDD. My father wiped the hardddrive and installed window XP onto it via another laptop. It now loads up bygone the compaq logo. It says "078665" above the compaq logo and loads up to 262144 kb within the top left foot corner, It asks for the power on password (which I know). After this it says here was a harddrive flop and and tells me to reboot it.

The laptop have a bad HDD controller, not firm drive (unless it took the HDD with it when it go out). That makes the laptop trash because the motherboard is no righteous. The controller is embedded and within isn't room for add-on cards or controllers. Sorry to be the bearer of bleak news.
