Is a pc5300 memory module backwards compatible next to a notebook that have pc4200 memory?

If the laptop supports it. It would run at the speed of the lowest knock against in the system so if you added it to 4200 it would also run 4200. Go here while on puter within question and click "scan my system" if it shows 5300 as an upgrade it will work within your laptop.
