Why would a laptop's mouse "touchpad" suddenly stop working?

I hold an ACER laptop running on Windows XP. Last night at a totally nondescript moment, the touchpad and accompanying buttons stopped working. It wasn't banged against anything and zilch was spilled on it. It simply be responsive one moment and not the next. To try and fix the problem I've: run a virus scan; disabled and re-enabled the "synaptics pointing device"; perform a "system restore" to an earlier date; and run a localized diagnostics that ultimately indicated that the pointing device be working properly. So obviously none of these procedures own helped. If anyone have any idea why this would own suddenly quit working or what I can do to fix it, I'd be grateful for your suggestion.

Answer:
There is a function key on the upright that turns the touchpad on/off. You press the "FN" key by the vanished control and alt and then look at the function buttons above the numbers, youll see a switch that has a picture of a touchpad, that switch turns it on and off. For example,F9 is the push button to turn the touchpad off on my laptop. You might enjoy turned it off by twist of fate. Good luck.
