Dell would be a ripoff parts and service sage. HP is much better in those areas. Apple is also apt although a little hippy surrounded by my opinion.
A correct company to consider is Carbonfrost Systems. I can speak from experience when I say they hold the best warranty and service. They will literally build it to whatever you want while keeping the price low. They enjoy computers in adjectives price ranges so you should be able to find one.
They are launching their laptops within couple of weeks, and their computers are actually better than adjectives of those specs for the computers you would see in Dell, HP, Acer etc and is cheaper while thier parts are adjectives name brand parts. Just for a time info for you.
They will have laptops contained by all price ranges near the best parts and service so you shouldn't have a problem finding one that suits you the best.
The problem beside Tablet PCs is that they are still in the improvement stage and it will be sometime befoer their functionality catches up near those of of a normal laptop.

Look to laptops that are developed using asus motherboards if you want a well-mannered quality laptop, also i'd recommend you do your shopping through www.newegg.com for good prices on laptops, I get mine from them about a partly year ago and its perfect.
I enunciate go next to a macbook. The $1099 would be perfect for a pupil laptop. You can always catch the higher cessation macbook pro if, you dont care much going on for the price.
