Your intricate drive head might enjoy crashed on the disk due to the fall, messing up sector of the O/S. You might want to run a checkdisk, which would find and repair such a problem. WinXP does not allow a direct checkdisk, but does let you set one up for the subsequent reboot. This is done by opening Windows Explorer (shortcut is Window-E) or double-clicking on My Computer, right click on the C-drive, click on Properties, click on Error-Checking, check both boxes and click Start. You will grasp a message stating this cannot be done now, but will be planned for next reboot. Look at your peak during reboot and see if any sectors needed repairs.
If no repairs needed, or still does volatile turn offs, you will need to own the laptop checked out by a pro.
How long does it go in the past it "turns off?" It might be from disinterest, in which grip, you can change the timeout by going to Control Panel and Power Management.
