Slow laptop = low RAM?

I hold already done a full Norton system scan, deleted items from the startup tab, disk cleaned and defragged, and my laptop is still slow. Is near a problem with the memory or harddrive? Also, programmes similar to Word take a long time to get underway and at times the arrow/mouse moves slowly. Startup takes ten minutes. I am running on Windows XP, bought the laptop 1.5 years ago, 80G HDD and 512 MB. Is in that a way to check the amount of RAM departed?

Answer:
512 RAM is a bit light especially since everything take RAM and Norton, XP and Office products are resource intensive. You might want to check out crucial.com to see if you can add more RAM
Whats slowing you down is Norton, bring back rid of it.
Hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC -- this will open up duty manager. Then you can travel to the performance tab. Here is where on earth you can view your knock against usage and availability.
You might really want to add some more bump ... go for 1Gb I really recommend getting your memory at crucial.com i get mine there and its profusely cheaper and better quality

Good Luck
nuke your computer and start next to a fresh install of windows.
