It is always a moral idea to gain the largest amount of RAM possible and most new laptops set aside a free upgrade to windows vista (usually beside all custom build systems and a few select manufactured ones) when it become available. If you're buying a newer laptop then it probably take a maximum of 1 to 2 GB using 2 sticks. Just make sure you own an available slot to stick that second stick you will buy in the adjectives to bring it up to its maximum capacity.

Vista takes 512mb purely to start up, even a laptop with 4gb of RAM surrounded by it, such as mine, would struggle to run Vista, an AV and a high-speed internet connection.
Vista take at least 1gb to run comfortably, my guidance, buy a computer with 1gb of RAM surrounded by it if you can afford it, and stick with XP.

If you plan to upgrade to Microsoft Windows Vista (which comes out immensely soon), I would definitely recommend going next to a minimum of 1GB, rather than 512MB. Even if you don't plan to upgrade, 1GB would label your computer run much more smoothly.
get the one near only 512, but afterwards upgrade it yourself to a gig. contained by most cases you will save a ton of money this route.
