The biggest LT salesday is Black Friday, the morning after thanksgiving. Next one coming up in the US is around labor morning.
The best sales event surrounded by the US is the Thanksgiving sale. This year it is on Nov 22. Be prepared for the event and check out the deal available at shops like Best Buy and Circuit City. On Thanksgiving afternoon, you probably have to stand within queue at your favorite store throughout the night to take hold of your deal.
The best time is when up to date, revolutionary hardware is about to come out(usually happen every 2 years). I'm afraid you just missed it - Santa Rosa freshly came out(May 2007), and beside that DirectX10 support for laptops.

I've never seen Sony or Alienware doing more than $200 rebate on their websites, but Sony's third party retailers, resembling CircuitCity will do some pretty good deal. Alienware is now owned by Dell(as of 2006), and Dell give rebates for basically about everything. I hope they drag Alienware into that rebate lunacy.
EDIT2: Online they mostly do instant rebates, contained by store they will probably combine instant, and mail-in rebates. Mail within rebates are not guaranteed, most associates just forget to convey them, then, a low percentage is lost surrounded by the mail, or costumers don't convey required information(copy of receipt, and inventive UPC). But once the people contained by charge of paying you they mail-in rebate get adjectives required info, chances are you will capture a check within 4 weeks.
