I other recommend IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpads. Not flashy, but they sure take a battering.
BTW, Lenovo still sells the IBM branded ThinkPads, as in good health as thier own brand.
One thing you enjoy to look at in today's laptops is expansion ports. Like, does it own a parallel printer port, S-video port, PS/2 mouse keyboard port, etc.
Of course the port necessities would depend on which equipment you plan to hook your laptop up to.
