What can i do to speed up a laptop?

ive tried disk cleanup and defrag, delete unwanted software and files, anti virus and anti spyware scans, and ive used ccleaner. It works a bit for a light of day or so then slows down. Also start up is slow, but ive stopped what i surmise are unnecessary startups, but there are things i dont know what they are contained by the startup list.

Answers:
Startup programs are usually useless applications installed by your entrepreneur. Disabling all of them (from msconfig.exe) won't wounded your computer, you can also disable all Non-Microsoft services. That should speed it up.

If you're looking for more speed, try increasing the virtual memory. (System Properties Dialog)
Get an external complicated drive, basically it is a piece of equipment you can store adjectives your files, photos, movies, music. You plug it in via USB and you can access the files straight from your laptop, for this reason free-ing up all of your laptops memory
It sounds approaching the operating system you are using is too much for the hardware you are running it on. If it is an older laptop, a regulation to an operating system something like Xubuntu linux will bestow you a good speed increase. I enjoy an old pentium 3 next to 256 meg ram running this and it is a rocket immediately, never crashes, and no viruses.
Laptop's are annoying to upgrade, the likelihood you you may needot get a unusual one or listen to the advise above.
as long as everything is ok ie.no virus no doggy programmes, not to much shitte
ram, bump, ram, and more knock against as long as your mother board will support it
Be careful next to what you stop from the startups, can be a dangerous exercise...!

If the laptop is not so unsullied, and you have a relatively small hard-drive, check how much space you enjoy set in the internet option for temporary internet files, you might want to concider reducing this, as typically if the contraption slows down after a few days use it must be something that is 'filling up' cause the problem.

Another one to look at is increasing your RAM, this is always an excellent path to boost the performance. As time go by we all ending up putting more programs etc on our machines, and invariably end up max'ing out the memory. Depending on the applications you use you want to look to enjoy at least 1Gb Ram if you are running standard Win XP and Office programs. If you do lots of video/picture editing buy as much as you can afford/fit contained by the machine...!!

Watch out near the number of 'anti' things you run and install, these themselves can cause problems...even the big-name scanners can be poor, Norton etc... (I've other used Bullguard and found it excellent!)

Check the settings on your Virus scanner, see if you have it set up to scan 'all files', or 'all incoming', and how recurrently you have it set to do a full system scan. You might find that you can evolution some of those setting to avoid it scanning so much when you are trying to in fact use it...!! Set it up to do a full scan just once a week, possibly overnight on a Sunday or something and leave the contrivance on overnight to do it...

Anyway... good luck...!!
You best bet is to re-install or get better your XP installation. This would put all the system files final at the beginning of the unyielding disk and make it quicker again.

Obviously backup adjectives your important documents.

How much RAM hold you got? Most recent laptops should be capable of handle at least possible 1GB of RAM 2 x 512MB. You may have to replace both SODIMMS as you may already enjoy 2 x 256mb.
Buy a high spec foreign one, rip the screen past its sell-by date your old one, screw the put a bet on of your old one to the wall, bonding agent the screen to the front of that, plug the blind back surrounded by, attach a wireless mouse+keyboard, and viola! a wall mounted PC and a faster laptop! Success!
For a quick fix download Advanced Windows Care v2.Free.
WELL YES YOU ARE DOING ALL THE RIGHT THINGS EXCEPT FOR ONE.FIRSTLY IF YOU DONT HAVE A D DRIVE.THEN GET A PARTITION MANAGER TO DIVIDE YOUR C DRIVE SO YOU COULD ALSO GET A SEPARATE PORTABLE HARD DISK.

THE REASON FOR THIS IS BECAUSE WHEN YOU LOAD NEW APPLICATIONS YOU ALWAYS LOAD THEM AND INSTALL THEM INTO THE C DRIVE.THUS PUTTING MORE WORK ALL INTO 1 DRIVE.

SO NEXT TIME YOU WANNA LOAD SOMETHING,REMEMBER TO PUT THE IMPORTANT STUFF LIKE THE OPERATING SYSTEM INTO THE C DRIVE AND OTHERS INTO THE D DRIVE BUT NOT THE PORTABLE ONE.HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT.
Try and upgrade your RAM dimensions if your system permits it. You can find good deal online at
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ I added a 1GB RAM chip to my laptop to increase the capacity and the result is merely brilliant. Good luck!!
Optimise your computer for maximum performance.
Delete any files that you dont requirement or put them on CD/DVD to save space on your harddrive.

Finally remove startup programs that do not have need of to run: Start> run> type "msconfig" without " grades.> startup> and untick programs that you dont need to run on startup such as MSN messenger.

Make sure you dont stop any essential components for Windows. Having large files on your desktop (like a movie download) can slow startup time. Check the website within sources for more information about which programs you can stop.

Might nouns strange but keeping fans, etc verbs does help running. I would also suggest a virus scan. Reformating the harddrive and reinstalling XP will have the best results, but is markedly time consuming and can be difficult.

The only other style would be to upgrade your laptop with more RAM, but this depends on your model as some laptops can be uprgraded. If you enjoy had the laptop for a few years you own had a incredibly good run. It may be time for a topical one. Norton Antivirus can slow your computer a lot so try a free program approaching AVG.
