Upgrade for vista?

I'm buying a Dell Inspiron 6400 ( http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products... the middle one). It comes free beside either Windows Vista Aero or XP. Some folks seem to dislike Vista because of compatability, but from what I group this should be resolved after a few months or so right? I want this laptop to last me a long time, so I don't want to own to go upgrading it and buying Vista because XP have died off. But I'd also similar to to keep the price as low as possible.
When you jump into the 'customise' section it say Vista will run on the standard stuff, but they have "For advanced Vista Experience, Dell Recommends" option. They recommend upgrading;
"1Gb (2x 512Mb) 667 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM" to "2Gb (2x 1024Mb) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM" (for $180).
and the "Intel Media Accelerator 950 Graphics" to
"256Mb ATI Mobility Radion X1400 Hypermemory" (for $200).
How necessary is it for me to upgrade these, and is it worth doing?

Answer:
Vista is a wearing clothes operating system, and it has a few small compatibility issues. I am running it right in a minute, and all the programs I used within XP run just fine, and as time pass, just approaching XP, Microsoft will release many patch to fix issues. For the laptop, 1 gig will do fine for Vista if you want to hang on to it cheap, upgrading RAM is always obedient though, so if you upgrade anything make it RAM. As for the graphics card, since you enjoy 1 gig of bump, aero and all of Vista's pretty graphics will run simply fine, but if you had any inclination to activity on the laptop, you should upgrade. Hope this helps, I am using Vista right very soon, so if you have any question, just ask.
hello,
My guidance would be to get what you can afford and not be swayed into overly logical ( ideals) details that it needs this 'n' that . Many software systems work on elder equipment that is be not designed for; (you have to be faithful though windows 3.1 probably won't work on the contraption you're considering. I ususally buy a new op system when my business software version begin to look dated ie: bureau 95 when everyone is using 2003 .
However I do believe the most important article to do with a fresh computer upgrade is to buy as much memory, and as much hard drive as possible, as it is these that date a device faster over a few years; as software gets larger memory. (Just look at the size of the updates to be downloaded !)
Another article to be aware of is graphics cards (I notice you mention a couple above), the more powerful it is the better for games playing, so if you intend to play profusely of games over the internet timing and speed of graphics uploading is very central.
This is all I can report you that I know you will find more technically minded people here (I hope). At most minuscule I hope I've been adjectives.
Take care own a nice day,
V
