Any thoughts on them?

Answer:
If you approaching my idea, tolerate me know.

First, stay away from HP computers. They're not fun.

Secondly, stay away from Compaq. They're no good.

Because you requested a cheap but a powerful computer, I will cheerily recommend you to Dell. Visit here. http://www.dell.com/content/products/pro...

Why do I recommend Dell? Well, there are abundant reasons. My first sense is that their customer service is excellent. Their customer service was a headache surrounded by the past, in a minute today Dell offers exellent customer service happiness.

Let's say your computer happen to be defective. Instead of waiting on the phone to speak with a PC technician, you can simply stop by Dell Online Chat here at http://support.dell.com/support/topics/g... and speak with a tech minus having to verbs about Dell diction, and you'll only continue for 5 minutes... All you need to do is call round http://support.dell.com/support/topics/g... and then enter your service flap number and you are set. I've done this so many times beside my friends Dell notebooks and desktops. It is as comfortable as cheese...

My second reason to recommend dell would be their upgradfe availability. You can customize your notebook to suit your wishes and taste.

Dell computers later for a very long time if properly maintain. Back in the days I used to foreboding Dell, but lately they're great computers, winning awards over other computer brands and such.

Once again, for your budget, I notably recommend a Dell.

Dad.
I think as long as you a moment ago want it for carrying around and doin basic stuff near it, get the cheapest one you can. purely keep it up to date next to virus protection.
Some points to consider:

If you do want to take it next to you often, compare the weights and peak sizes. You want to minimize awkwardness for carrying.

Also, I'd go near Windows XP for now if you're not already up to date with Windows Vista.

If you're only just using this for computing basics, any latest computer on the market should really be fine.

I'd kind sure to get no smaller quantity than 1 GB memory/RAM and be sure the hard drive is colossal enough for everything you want to store. Depending on your wishes, I wouldn't go smaller quantity than 80 GB.
Everex 15.4" StepNote NC1502 Widescreen Laptop PC w/ Via Processor this one is good self get it
You should achieve the Toshiba Satellite A105-S2236 15.4" Laptop w/ Intel Celeron M Processor 520
The Everex is what you're looking for, about $478.00. The Compaq obviously is a better brand for $598.00 but for $90 more the Everex will get you double the memory, a mouse and a valise.
If your going to buy an inexpensive laptop all you really stipulation to worry give or take a few is good support from the company you buy it from. If you buy it from a department store and something go wrong you will find it much harder and it will take much longer to find fixed. If you want great support go next to Dell.
