Answer:
first if you want one for 3D gaming STAY AWAY FROM CELERON, celeron is not made for gaming, and it will accomplish bad same item with AMD Sempron (there is a plea they are cheaper). the 2 most important item for gaming other then memory are processor and video card. you want to product sure you have intel centrino, or an AMD Turion processor, also you want to find a laptop with dutiful ATI or Nvidia graphic chipset.
so here is the essentials you must to hold:
Centrino or Turion processor
a good ATI or Nvidia Graphic chipset (most big thing for gaming)
1GB strike
you should be able to catch a good laptop near these specs and your budget, and remeber once you buy the laptop you can easily upgrade the memory, but its remarkably difficult and sometimes not possible to upgrade video card and processor.
brand erudite HP and Toshiba's are both really good.
My best proposal is to get a pious laptop with great support. Since most technology is standardized at the moment you need a company that will nick care of you AFTER the Dutch auction.
The best laptop/support combo right now is Lenovo (IBM technology). Companies resembling HP and Dell make you salary for support and get your credit card past answering.
Good thing you asked, because a average laptop will not do what you need, even the average $2000USD laptop is not configured for games.
Laptops intended for gaming start around $1100USD.
The major component contained by a gaming laptop is the graphics card. The x1600 in my 5672wlmi is at smallest 6 times as powerful as the most powerful integrated graphics on a normal laptop.
If you want a right gaming laptop, you should go near Asus. They specialize in them.
I recommend this model asus, even though its a short time more than what you want to pay, the gig leap is substantial for the extra 70 pounds:

I dont believe Newegg ships to the UK, but Im sure asus has retailers over nearby, too.
Good hunting!
