Can I use a Wifi USB adapter to create a wireless access point for my laptop?

My parents purely bought me a laptop for my birthday and it has a built contained by Wireless LAN card, but the problem is I dont have a wireless internet nouns. I have a WIRED router. If I buy a wireless usb wifi adapter and set it up on the home PC can i create an access point for my laptop

ya..they are like little cheap routers, they work fine, but i would freshly get a router at a computer store;faster, larget nouns of use, better connection
