when you connect your laptop to your tv, you need to connect both video and audio. it doesn't concern if you use vga or s-video output, you still need to run a cable from the headphone output jack to the audio input on the tv. i hold a 1/8" headphone-style jack to rca output cable that works great

It depends what lead you have and what TV you hold. Ive got a Sony Bravia and theres a PC moniter plug on it, i basically connect a cable with 2 screw things on any end. Also try playin around near your settins on the tv and computer. AV might work. You may have to start an output on your laptop. Hope that helps
try a different audio source on the menue funct of your tv and check to craft sure the volume is turned up and the mute is not turned on on your computer.
