Are you a doctor? WHat do you intend to use the laptop for?
If it is only storing facts pertaining to your patients / medical records / payments n receipts / and you dont own to travel (along with the data) later a desktop would be ideal.
But if you drop by more than 1 clinic / hospital then a laptop would be the solely solution.
If you would liek to listen to music or watch a movie or play a hobby while travelling, a laptop would be perfect
If you own the moolah i'd recommend the following specs:
CPU: Intel Dual Centrino T7200 (2.4 GHz) or T5600 (2 GHz)
OS: Windows XP (Wait till they iron out the bugs wth Vista)
RAM: Pref 2 GB (2x1Gb) - atleast 1 GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda or Western Caviar 320 Gb @ 7200 rpm SATA
If you have profoundly of graphics dedicated requirements (like X ray imagery n videos) a graphics card - NVidia GeForce 7600 GT 256 MB

it depends partly on what you are wanting to do near the computer. if you are always on the budge and are hardly home, consequently a laptop would be good. if you are home alot after a desktop is good. for a medical professional i would suggest a laptop next to windows XP medium center. this way you carry the normal window items but it can also double as a portable entertainment system.
well base on your question, you currently own neither. therefore, my suggestion would be to purchase a laptop. Reason human being that you can use at home OR at work.
