Need workstation info what type of pc. on the mac run disk first aid and if that dont work start up the workstation holding down the apple c keys, and reinstall the disk aid software. On windons log onto http://www.windowsupdate.com here you can bring upgraded free or simply restart the pc and press the f8 push button then run your anti virus.

Generically speaking, disk check/scan disk simply looks for bad/corrupted sectors on your tricky drive and tries to recover them. I do a disk check at least once a week and clear adjectives the old cookies and run adaware and my virus software, a bit of flawless housekeeping I learnt years ago. Keeps everything running all right and hopefully prevents disk errors later on, doesn't appropriate long if your disk is in angelic condition.
