As previously stated you will want an Alternate OS to boot to if you're not going to be running Vista. Ensure that you have the orig disks... donate it about a year and vista will be a viable likelihood, unfortunately at this time it isn't... and consequently you can go stern to vista. I recommend XP pro due to it's stability but run whatever make you feel comfortable. I myself am still using Windows 2000 as it is more memory simplified for video purposes which aids in it's increased speed. (no theme taking precious memory to redraw over and over)
Format the drive that contains the OS on it. But you should know that when you delete the only OS on your laptop you will not be capable of use it unless you reinstall another OS using the CD or DVD
by any putting something else over it or use a bootdisk to format the vista drive
Sam is right. Keep in mind, though, that on a laptop you probably just have one unyielding drive. By formatting that drive, you will loose all information on that drive. You should amass all of your key information to cd or jumpdrive before formatting.
