My laptop runs Windows xp pro, and is severely slow. How do I fix it?

Click on Start and Run. Type in msconfig and click on OK. Click on the Startup tab. Click on Disable adjectives and then progress through the list and uncheck your anti-virus programs. Restart and when the message comes up that you are starting surrounded by Diagnostics Mode check the box to not ask again. Run it and see if this fixes the problem. If this doesn't download Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware personal from Download.com. They are free downloads. Install and run them, do the scans and fix adjectives problems. I hope this helps.
First see how much Ram you own in your laptop. Even though Microsoft say 512meg is good adequate. You really need 1gig of bump to run XP properly. I would also check to see how much hard drive space you are giving to XP for virtual memory. If in that isn't enough space anyone given there (I would suggest using the choice of letting Windows create the space needed) it too will drastically slow down your system.
Also when was the finishing time you defraged your hard drive? A scantily fragmented hard drive will also slow down your system.
First of adjectives do a virus/spyware check and clean up and defrag your thorny drive. If it's still slow you might want to think roughly speaking adding some extra RAM.
