I connected the extenal video cable to the projector and the output plug contained by the back of my Dell. The monitor turns on but say no signal. What settings do I have to alteration in my laptop to capture it to display through the projector.

Usually theres a easy mode to switch this on the keyboard. On my IBM it's <Fn><F7>, Dells are close to that too.
Look at your Function keys and see if you see print within color (like blue). That would indicate you use the function key to select.
