CD-rom drive not identified by window?

I enjoy a Gateway laptop purchased new surrounded by October 2005 that is running Windows XP. A few days ago the CD-rom drive stopped human being recognized. It does not show up contained by My Computer. It is the original drive, so I am not sure what the problem may be. The drawer unseal and closes fine, the light on the laptop blinks to show the drawer is mortal opened, but afterwards nothing happen when a cd/dvd/cd rom is inserted. I have tried restarting, but that doesn't do anything to fix it. Any planning? Thanks.

Here is some other information that usually solves these type of issues.

Verify that the most current version of the driver for the DVD or disc drive is being used. This is competent in the following behaviour:

Close any open programs or window and return to the desktop.

Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Properties from the menu that appears.

In the System Properties skylight, click the Hardware tab.
Click Device Manager button.

Click View and choose View Devices By Type.
In the list that appears, locate DVD/CD-ROM Drives or Controller.

Click the plus sign (+) subsequent to this listing. The disc and/or DVD drive manufacturer and drive model number will appear below the DVD/CD-ROM Drives book.

Double-click the name that appears.
In the Properties fanlight, select the Driver tab.

Record the information that appears.
Contact the computer or CD/DVD drive manufacturer and request information in connection with the newest driver for the drive. In most cases, information can be obtain at the web site of the computer or CD/DVD drive capitalist.

NOTE: Do not click the Update Driver button. The Update Driver wizard searches the system (not the Internet) for drivers to the select device.


Download and install the new driver.
Try the disc or DVD again.
First thing to do is to see if the compact disc rom can be seen contained by the bios. Press F1, or F10 or the del key when it's booting up and see if it's timetabled under the drives. If it can't be see there, it's unquestionably broken. Even so, it it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
I recently have to replace a CD-rom in a laptop i.e. newer than yours. These days computer makers are contained by a price war. So contained by order to provide laptops cheaper they buy cheaper parts. Gateway doesn't make compact disc rom drives so they have to buy them from a supplier. But let's frontage it, they are not going to buy a top-of-the-line Sony and put them in every laptop they trade. They are going to buy from the cheapest vendor. You can probably hold yours replaced buy going to the website and buying a new one. I salaried about $67 for the one I have to replace.
